Hello! Welcome back to another short review of Attack On Titan episode. We are almost in the middle of season two and the show just stopped to a crawl! Big reveal in the episode five, called Historia, still couldn’t nudge the episode to move faster. We get to see the back story to Ymir and Christa and as much as I liked it, I still wished they would show something more.
The episode opens up in a flashback scene. The main characters are still training and are walking through a snowy storm back to camp. Here things get complicated as Ymir, Christa and Daz appear to be missing. It is also the first time Ymir uses her titan powers, though that is not really shown, but hinted at. The whole episode centers more around Ymir and Christa and their relationship, so the episode seems slow, though we do get a lot of information. Before I go into it, I just wanted to point out that I am impressed with how they make each episode! They are including so much more other characters that I am seriously beginning to think that Eren, Armin, Mikasa and Levi, the ones we cheered on in season one will soon die? Are they preparing us for that? Because they are almost non present in season two and we are already on episode 5.
Anyway, back to Ymir and Christa. The flashback scene serves as the center of the episode. Most of the conversation between the two is actually just repeating stuff we already know. Christa has a secret past, a fake name, a family that she is not connected to. We also get confirmation that Ymir knows about her secret and sought Christa out because of it. The scene still gets some depth, explaining how Christa is super stubborn and somehow selfish and selfless at the same time. As much as she wants to help others she at the same time desperately wants to appear good and noble, even at her own expense. Ymir can see clearly through her, remember previous episodes where she yells at Christa for wanting to throw her life away? The fact how Ymir sees through her goes well also with the tower scene, where Christa tells her to destroy it, save herself and abandon everyone else. The build up on Christa and Ymir has been done well, so considering they used up so much screen time for the two I expect to see Christa shifting their future or at least maybe be a titan as well? Helping the humans like Eren?
Darkest moment in the flashback is definitely the two of them talking about Daz. They don’t want him to die, but dragging him slowly through the snow storm will probably have the same effect and include both of them as well. Throwing him through the cliff may seem cruel and dangerous and it is, but maybe not so much to the viewers who already know Ymir is a titan and will help him survive the fall.
The second part of the episode serves up a rescue scene. The Survey Corp reach the castle ruins and help kill as many titans as possible. Mikasa here really stands out! It is always great to watch her in action, the animation with her in the scenes is always so good! Eren also fights the titans and actually kills his first titan! That is in his human form, he has killed titans before, but transformed into titan.
At the end we get Christa revealing her true name, Historia. And we see Survey Corp saving Ymir and cutting her out. She lost a leg and is bleeding and I am not sure if she still lives? I guess they will keep her alive as they spent so much time prepping it all up. I think though that she doesn’t know much about the titans, where they come from, why are they in the wall. Though maybe she does, after all she is seen listening to the two priests talking about Christa as a child and maybe, just maybe she was with the same priests who guard the secret to the titans in the wall?
Reiner and Bertolt are always somewhere close, but they don’t seem very surprised when they see Ymir turn into titan. They keep showing us how Ymir ate their friend as a titan, but they still haven’t explained who that was and why is that scene important? Maybe something to build a future conflict on?
Hope next week reveals some more action. And maybe explain why so much attention to a bastard child and a secret titan?
Thanks for reading!
