Hello! As expected from the latest episode, Close combat, it delivers just that – a lot of action, combat, strategy and a lot of god damn flashbacks!  The epic showdown still prevails and the episode is one of my favourite so far this season!

The title of the episode matches it pretty well, however they should include word “epic” with it as  well! If you follow the anime or read my reviews regularly, than you know already that we have two super strong and dangerous foes – Bertolt as Colossal titan and Reiner as Armored titan.

Bertolt transformed into Colossal titan and at first I thought he transformed himself completely and gained a full body. With the new episode I saw that he actually just had his upper body and hands. Hange than goes in with the rest of the Survey Corp, trying to defeat him, but they are not successful. He protects himself, though he doesn’t attack anymore. With clouds of hot steam they can not attack him with their equipment or get close to him anyway. He is shown eating Ymir and one more, but Christa still clings to hope that Ymir can not be dead! There was some speculation that he didn’t eat those two, just somehow trapped them inside himself and tried to kidnap them, but I don’t see how that’s possible.

Colossal titan may be slow but he shows us he can also protect himself and actually weaponize his titan form. So far the anime watchers get to know that some titans have abilities – armor like Annie and Reiner,  talking or commanding others like Beast titan, Ymir and Eren, the ability to call upon other normal titans, like Annie did in her Female titan form. Eren has so far only shown that he can control himself and his attacks and this last episode when Hange approaches him that he can listen to instructions and understand them. He doesn’t really give her a reply, more like hmmph.

Before the episode centers on Eren and Reiner, we get to see Connie carrying a fellow soldier and asking others to help Reiner and Bertolt because they also don’t have the gear and can not fight. At that moment I was just like – damn boy, you blind or something? Or just in super deep denial? The betrayal of these two surely was immense.

After this the episode mostly shows just the epic combat scene and of course the super annoying flashbacks where Eren remembers the fight between Annie and Mikasa, Annie teaching him how to defend himself against an opponent who is stronger than him. I get that this gives us more insightful look in how Eren functions and attack, but it could be kept shorter. Than again, looking back on the episode, this was actually the only storyline in the whole episode, the only time they could build up the knowledge we already have and add some emotional dimension to the episode. Otherwise it is just brutal beating and breaking bones. And I loved it! I loved the combat part so much and was so annoyed the first I watched the episode because I just wanted to skip the trip down the memory lane. Mostly I was thinking to myself that Eren’s titan form looks damn hot, even with the double lined teeth and he really looks super angry and doesn’t let the past and the pain of betrayal to get to him. He fights as best he can, as he doesn’t have hardened skin and is not as strong as Reiner. Henge, Armin and Mikasa try to help him, but in the end only Mikasa really gets anything done.

So, did Eren win or not? Well in a way he did, he got Reiner to almost lose his armor ability and he did force him to call out for help. He was screaming and calling out in that titan roar voice and everyone was like – ” but there are no titans around here, who is he calling?”. I think this was a stupid line of dialog. Who do you think he’s calling??? Bertolt’s Colossal titan was half deformed already as he spent all his energy protecting himself (I was thinking why do that, when you are the Colossal titan, just kill them all already?!) and the episode ends with the skeleton falling off the wall right on top of Eren and Reiner. We’ll see in next episode how the fight ended and who actually wins, probably no one as they all get beaten and broken. Still, I don’t get Reiner and Bertolt. Exposing themselves I thought they would start killing them all, as they no know their secret. Also Bertolt swings his hands at the beginning but later just sits there and doesn’t move, keeps up his steam shield, but doesn’t engage them otherwise. Why is that, why keep them alive when all you ant is Eren? Still no answers to the question why they want them in the first place!

Loved the combat part of the episode so much! Really loved the animation as well and can’t wait to see what happens next episode. By far my favourite moment of the episode was when Hange goes to Eren, gives him ideas and instructions on how to defeat Reiner and when he agrees, looks at her and hums in agreement, she blushes so hard! That was just so adorable! The episode however didn’t do much in the sense of leading the story forward, so I guess my hopes of getting any real answers this season should slowly die away… The fun part of all those flashbacks – Annie and Mikasa showdown, who do you think won? I bet on Mikasa!
